This sound recording contains interviews with four individuals. Roy Williams recounts key union leaders who were integral in the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. He then recalls porters’ nicknames as well as the experience of boarding in bunkhouses before reflecting on the practice of tipping and the many awards he garnered throughout his lifetime. Willis Richardson [begins at 00:11:37] speaks about his early life in Alberta, which included working as a ranch hand. He then turns to his career as a sleeping car porter for the Canadian Pacific Railway, which spanned 35 years, recounting why he decided to take this job, some of the characters with whom he worked, and a handful of memorable moments he experienced during his travels. Cordie Williams [Second sound file, begins at 00:00:00], who was Roy William’s wife, recounts her early life in Alberta, her parent’s decision to leave the USA to homestead in Athabaska, her experiences as a domestic worker in Calgary and then her participation in the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. Odell Holmes [Second sound file, begins at 00:10:05] recounts his early life in western Canada and then proceeds to speak about his work as a sleeping car porter, a job of which he was not particularly fond. He recounts working conditions prior to the establishment of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters (BSCP), the process of forming the union and those who were at the heart of its creation, as well as the role played by the BSCP Ladies’ Auxiliary especially in fundraising.
